Sweco Netherlands has recently become the first engineering consultancy in the Netherlands to achieve the ISO 19650 certification following a successful audit of its BIM processes by the BSI. As lead consultant on this project, we worked with Sweco to develop its people, process and documentation to support a digital delivery capability.

The certificate has become the international standard for the management of information over the entire lifecycle of an asset through the adoption of digital construction workflows. The audit itself is a rigorous assessment of an organisation’s ability to deliver BIM projects to the ISO 19650 framework. The framework is concerned with managing project information including exchanging, recording, versioning and organising for all project stakeholders.

The BSI presented Sweco with their ISO 19650 certificate at a recent event at their Netherlands HQ.

Since the introduction of the certificate in December 2018, it is the first time that it has been awarded to an engineering consultancy in the Netherlands. The Technology Team used the certification project as a catalyst to transform and standardise the way that project information is shared and managed, using a central information model. Now designs and projects are set up digitally, executed by integrated multi-disciplinary teams and delivered uniformly.

As well as providing guidance on best practice for delivering BIM projects, developed through supporting our customers in the UK, we delivered specific workstreams related to process documentation and establishing a Common Data Environment. Led by John Jansson, the Head of Technology at Sweco, we supported an ambitious programme of change within the organisation which required us to deliver the project in a relatively short timeframe.

The BSI BIM certification scheme allows asset owners to procure high performance, information rich projects, confident that their supply chain can meet the rigorous requirements of the global ISO BIM standards. The certification is applicable to all members of the supply chain from main contractors and lead consultants through to specialist fabricators and product designers. Now is the right time to get ahead of your competitors and join the growing number of customers who we have helped to successfully certify their businesses.
